DROUGHT by E.J. McAdams (w/H Spencer Young)
DROUGHT, a text-based work, plays with erasure to convey multiple meanings. The piece is site-specific, and has the dimensions of a billboard. It draws inspiration from the tragic drought in and around the Aral Sea and from attempts by remote sensors and map makers to “picture” that loss. The design uses a color palette from maps from the water to the desiccated space in-between and in the background. The final execution allows one to see that loss with the eyes but also take it through the mouth by reading it and through the ears by sounding it. It is this fuller body experience that hopefully awakens action.
